Huldufólk - Icelandic hidden people from huldu- “pertaining to secrecy” and fólk “people”.
Iceland has until recently been one of the wealthiest and most highly developed nations in the world. Most of the population now inhabit urban centres, but Icelandic identity is tied up with a way of life that is disappearing fast. In most contemporary accounts the Huldufólk are not urban people but live in the rural landscape, authentic Icelanders.
53% of the Icelandic population either believe in, or will not deny the existence of Huldufólk. (Randolph 2002)
The sign produced by Hodgkinson occupies a territory somewhere between gestalt, geometric abstraction and landscape painting. It is a diversion from his normal practice, which is fundamentally concerned with the spontaneous and experimental qualities found in line drawing which are then transposed onto large scale paintings on aluminium panel.

Ed Hodgkinson (1973) lives and works in London. He has exhibited widely, in London and internationally, showing in New York, LA, Chicago, Tokyo, Amsterdam and Cape Town. Ed exhibited in Kopavogur Art Museum, Gerdarsafn in 2001 and Gallery Turpentine in Reykjavik in 2009.
