04.06.1894 is a photograph of Gertrude Baines, the world’s oldest living person. Ms. Baines resides in Los Angeles, California and is currently 115.
Her caregiver put me in touch with Theo Kingma, the most recent person to photograph Ms. Baines. The photograph was taken in mid May of 2009.
All correspondence and file exchange for this project took place through email. I have never met Ms. Baines or Mr. Kingma. I was interested in creating a work that was completely hands-off and a product of an everyday, contemporary process. At the same time, I wanted the work to both be at odds with this process and transcend it.
The sign bearing her image will be installed on the longest day of the year, Sunday, June 21, 2009.
